According to a descendant, Valentine enlisted in the spring of 1864 in Col. Joe Love's Cavalry, CSA - his brother had been in this unit since the company was formed. His father-in-law may have been in the same company. Valentine was shot through both knees at the Battle of Westport, was captured and sent to Gratiot Prison in St. Louis. He demanded transportation back to Arkansas.

On 13 April 1865, he is on a list for exchange, transferred from St. Louis, MO to the Military Prison at Alton, IL. Captured Jackson Co MO, 22 Oct 1864.

On Oath of Allegiance. The Oath is included dated 14 Jun 1865. Valentine signed with his mark. His description is as follows: Age 19, Height 5'7", Eyes Grey, Hair Dark.
An undated card repeats his release on 14 Jun 1865; states that his residence at the time of his enlistment was Lawrence Co, AR and he wishes transportation to Powhattan, AR.

Valentine married Henrietta Clinton, daughter of Harmon B. Clinton, perhaps from Shannon Co, MO. Harmon was born circa 1825, Crawford Co MO, son of William Clinton of South Carolina. Harmon married Charity Brooks, daughter of Nancy Brooks.

Valentine, Henreitta, Valentine's brother Thomas, Harmon Clinton his father-in-law, all said to buried Union Cemetery, in either Fulton or Izard Co, AR.

This cemetery is about 15 miles from Salem and about 6 miles from Wild Cherry but it is actually located at Union, Fulton Co., AR.
Valentine and Harriett have a joint headstone; his has the CSA emblem.

It's likely Harmon Clinton's grave was not marked, or the tombstone no longer there, but his second wife, Martha, is buried Union Cemetery and a great deal about her family given.

She married Capt. Isaac Drury Wilson (4-5 children). They moved to California about 1850. Her first child was born in California in 1852, then they moved back to Arkansas. She married 2nd by 1869 to Rev. Harmon Bailey Clinton (4 children). Lived in Northern Ark. relatively near her sister Mary Estes Spurlock.

The following was written by her son Thomas Newton Estes in 1910:
"I have just read in 'The Flag' Bro. Bonner's experiences of a mother's prayer. This carries me back to my earliest recollection in Henry County, Tennessee, eight miles east of Paris, about seventy years ago. Father was not at home. At night mother took us close to her - knelt down on the hearth, close by the fireside - she was going to give us to the Lord.
I didn't want to go, but expected the Lord to come every day for a long time. Finally I comprehended her meaning - still that prayer seemed to fasten on my mind more forcibly. By the Grace of the Lord I believe that prayer with others from my mother, led me to the cross. Thank the Good Lord for such a mother. She has long since crossed the river.
We left Tennessee in 1839. Mother belonged to a Baptist Church somewhere from 6 to 10 miles east of Paris, in the then neighborhood of the Manlys, Randles, Burtons, etc. I think the church was on a little sandy hill. Will some brother tell me if the church still stands? I remember the preacher's name was Browning. Oh, how I would like to visit the place of my childhood." -- T. N. Estes, Lunenburg, Arkansas
She died in 1872, probably in Sharp Co. I think that she was buried in Shiloh Cem. because her husband and 2 daughters were. Would like to have a picture if there is a gravestone.

Burris Estes, Jr
Birth: 1805, Orange County, North Carolina

Burris Estes Jr. was the son of Burris (Burroughs) Estes (Estridge) Sr., who had been named for his mother, Elizabeth Burroughs. Burris Jr's mother was Martha "Patsy" Lloyd.
In 1820-25 when Burris was 15-20 his father moved the family from North Carolina to Henry Co, Tn, where he had inherited his uncle's bounty land from the government as a result of his uncle's service in the Rev. War.
They lived about 8 miles east of Paris and attended a Baptist church there. Burris Jr. married Martha "Patsy" Morris in 1825 in Paris, Henry Co, Tn.
In 1839 Burris Jr. moved to Arkanas with his brothers Thomas and John. Their parents had both died by then.
In 1840 all three brothers were living in Lebanon twp, Lawrence Co, Ark. In 1850 they wre in Richwoods twp, Lawrence Co, Ark.
He was a leading agriculturist and died leaving considerable property in land and slaves. He and his wife were members of the Baptist church.
Burris died March 1, 1863, Lawrence Co., Ark. David Spurlock (his son-in-law) was appointed administrator of his will. The case was transferred to Sharp County when Sharp County was created in 1868.
Martha died shortly thereafter. Two of their sons moved to Idaho in 1874.
