William was a Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War and was in the battle of Cowpens. His brother James was wounded at that same battle and left for death on the battlefield. William found him and took him back to camp and nursed him back to health.

He was married to Elizabeth Ann Williams - she died 15 days after he died.
