This son also found in an SAR application. Richard said to have married Jane Harris, 1 Apr 1784. She was born 18 Sep 1763 and died 17 Sep 1821. Richard said to have enlisted from Albemarle VA for two months under Capt William Dalton, fall of 1780, when he was 17. In May of 1781, he enlisted again and served in the Virginia State Troops until after the surrender of Cornwallis. He was then discharged at Fredericksburg after serving six months. His pension application is dated 13 Aug 1832.

Elvis Presley is reported to be descnded from Richard - making him a 7th cousin. But this may be not true - he is reported to have descended from S. John Warren and his wife Cassandra Gentry - which would be my kin. However, Cassandra died and Warren remarried to Sarah Robinson. Exact dates of Cassandra's death and the second marriage have not been found but it was about the time son William David Warren was born - without exact dates, there is a question about which lady was his mother. The Ittawamba County page suggests he was born of the second wife - but this isn't certain - Cassandra may have died in childbirth or soon after William David was born which is said to be 23 Apr 1826, Fayette Co, AL.

This veteran has two burial places--it seems he was exhumed and buried in the Jefferson National Cemetery in St. Louis, becoming the only Revolutionary War veteran buried there. The son of David Gentry (son of Nicholas, son of Nicholas) and Mary Estes (dau of Richard Estes and Mary Yancey/Yancy). He was a Revolutionary soldier, enlisting from Albemarle Cty., Virginia, and serving first for two months as a private under Capt. William Dalton, at the age of 17. He was present at the capture of Cornwallis at Yorktown. Married (1) Jane Harris (in 1784) (dau of Christopher Harris and Agnes McCord); (2) Nancy Guthrie (in 1821) (dau of Nathaniel Guthrie and Nancy Jane Johns); had 19 children (seven with second wife), 16 of whom were sons. He was 'wealthy in lands and slaves' after the 1786 move from Virginia to Kentucky via the Cumberland Gap. His wife is said to have ridden the trip on horseback carrying her son Reuben in her arms. They settled at Boone's Fort, then established a plantation in Madison County. He boiled down salt water to salt and became wealthy in Kentucky, where salt was like money. Died on his estate in Madison County. (Some records give his name as William Richard.)(A 1929 cemetery listing for him said that he was born in Albemarle County, Virginia. Other sources have him born in Louisa County.)
Military Headstone was ordered and placed in the Jefferson Barracks Cemetery, MO on 20 June 1958. His birth and death and service as a Private in the Revolutionary War, Virginia, is proved. Note: Distintered from Madison County, KY and reinterred this cemetery. William R. Gentry, Jr., great great grandson of St Louis ordered the marker.
