Edward Breck

( - 2 Nov 1662)

Edward was baptized as Edward Brike, son of Robert of Raynford at the Chruch of All Saints, Wigan, Lancashire. Raynford, or Rainford, was a village in the parish of Prescot but near the border of the parish of Wigan. The other children of Robert Breck were baptized at Rainford.

Two pieces of Edward's correspondence with England have been preserved. 17 Aug 1655, he wrote a letter from Dorchester, New England, to the Church of Christ in Rainforth, condemning Quakers but encouraging differences of religious opinions. James Wood wrote at letter to Edward Brecke at Dorchester in Newe England (believe written about 1646) sending condolences on the loss of Edward's wife and daughter and alluding to an earlier death of a son in England. Wood had not heard from Edward for more than two years; he included greetings to Edward's son Robert. Edward Breck's first wife had sometime after April, 1641 and he was married to Isabel Rigby by 1647.

Edward Breck had immigrated prior to 20 Jun 1638, when he bought land in Dorchester, MA.
He was made a freeman in Dorchester, 22 May 1639. Mary Brecke was admitted to full communion in the Dorchester church on 16 Apr 1641.

Breck served as a selectman of Dorchester in 1642, 1645, and 1646, then again in 1655 and 1656.

17 Dec 1645, Edward Breck was given land on Smelt Brook Creek to 'set a mill there'.

In 1653, Edward was on a committee to dispense grants at Lancaster, MA. Edward's was the first name on the list, followed by his son Robert. In November he was to lay out the allotments of the plantation at Nashaway renamed Lancaster. Edward and Isabel must have spent a year or so in Lancaster as there was an inventory taken of his house, lands and goods in Lancaster in addition to his Dorchester estate, when he died in 1662.

By 19 Apr 1654, the family was back living in Dorcester.

Edward Breck's will was dated 30 Oct 1662, proved 11 Dec 1662. He provided for "all my daughter Blakes children to have each 49 shillings". It did not specifically say the daughter was deceased - she was the first mentioned in the will. A recent Blake genealogy in the NEHGS Register concluded that the daughter was Anna and she was the wife of William Blake whose wife was Anne or Anna by 1650. She had seven children by the date of Edward Breck's will, and four more after his death.
Other bequests were to son Robert, wife Isabel, his four children John, Mary, Elizabeth, and Susanna. He mentioned his estate in Lancaster. Wife Isabel was to be executrix with Edward Clapp and John Capen to advise her. Witnesses were John Capen and Samuell Rigby.
