Application for Pension states that he enlisted as a private in Company A, 12th Regt in September of 1864 at Montgomery. He was discharged 9 Apr 1865. He is age 64 and cannot work because of lumbago and sciatic rheumatism with constant pain, blind in left eye. Witnesses on 10 Jul 1909 were John Baker Sr. and W. Y. Mims.
Mary A. Popwell filed for her widow's pension. She was living with Lena Mae Popwell, her daughter in Clanton. She was born 17 Aug 1851 in Chilton Co - her father Alfred Baker, is dead. She married Reuben Popwell in Chilton Co, 24 Oct 1867. He died 28 Aug 1925. She has never been married to anyone else and has never applied for pension. She had never lived in any other state. Her husband was on the pension rolls of Chilton Co, Alabama. 6 Mar 1936. However, there is a letter from L. H. Reynolds, Probate Judge of Chilton County, date 19 Oct 1925, stating that the application of Mrs. Mary Ann Popwell is enclosed asking to be put on the pension rolls after the death of her husband.
On the back of one of the papers must be a list of her children - handwriting very difficult:
Mrs. Sina Hinl??? Clanton, Farmer
Mrs. Emma Teel, Clanton, Farmer
Miss Lena Popwell, Clanton, Farmer
Mrs. Callie Miller, Clanton, Electrician
Mr. Emmett Popwell, Clanton, Farmer

Reubin's death record is in error. It states his father was Alfred Popwell - but Alfred was about the same age as Reubin and his first cousin. James Popwell was his father. Mary Ann's father was Alfred Baker - maybe that's how the confusion crept in. Reubin died 28 Aug 1925 and was buried on the 30th, Clanton Cemetery. Spouse was Mary A. Popwell.
