Matthew Peatross

(1705 - Abt 1768)

Matthew is believed to be the son of John and Ann Peatross. John was the son of Matthew & Elizabeth Mayo Peatross, baptized Christ Church Parish, Middlesex Co, Sep 1679, along with his twin sister. John and Ann's children were named in the will of John's brother Thomas, who left all of his estate to them. There were four children named in 1715, all young - Thomas, Matthew, John, and Elizabeth. All three of the sons have records in Caroline Co VA.

Matthew is first found in Caroline Co, St. Margaret's Parish, in May 1739 when he was appointed to survey the road from Reedy Mill to Boot Swamp. He also bought land from Richard Corbin that same year.

A posting on the Catlett mail list - Matthew's wife is thought to have perhaps been Amey Catlett, but no proof offered. The post gives more details about the Will, dated 11 Apr 1768.
Matthew left to his son William the tract known as the Horse Pasture. Named wife as Amey. Unmarried children were Matthew, John, Thomas, James, Richard, Sarah, Mary, and Joannah. Daughter Ann Thompson was deceased - she had married John Thompson and her children were Matthew, John, Amey & Susannah. Daughter Amy was married to a Gatewood. Daughter Elizabeth was married to Joseph Campbell, denoted as son-in-law and one of the Executors. There is a suggestion that there was another daughter, who name is illegible.
Executors: wife Amey and Joseph Campbell
Sgned: Matthew Peatross
Witnesses: John Baynham, John Baynham Jr & George Lynch
Codical dated 11 Apr 1768
Witnesses: Anthony New, George Linch, Betty Bowler.
The will was recorded 11 Sep 1805. Matthew was deceased in 1769; obviously this was a later recording of the will because of later legal matters. If had been recorded earlier, it would have been lost.

I found in another reference that Rebecca who married Thomas Terrill, 14 Dec 1754, is the missing daughter from the above. The married daughters had already received their legacies. Each daughter received two slaves, a mare and saddle, bed and furniture, other household items & livestocks. Each of the unmarried daughters were to receive £30 each at their marriage. Each of Matthew's sons also received two slaves. Wife Amey received the homeplace as well as several slaves for her support and the support of the unmarried children. He named 32 slaves.

14 Jul 1768, the court ordered the estate of Matthew Peatross be appraised. Commissioners were Melchezedick Brame, Jeremiah Rawlins Jr., Richard West & John Montague.

In 1769, Amy Peatross, William Peatross, Joseph Campbell and Joseph DeJarnette were named as Executors or Administrators of the estate of Mathew Peatross. Matthew's will is said to be in a box of Caroline Co papers at the Virginia Archives, Richmond. His wife Amy and son-in-law, Joseph Campbell, married to daughter Elizabeth, were executors.
