Patience Chaffee

(16 Jan 1742 - 1816)

WorldConnect File:
Patience was born in Attleboro, Massachusetts, the fifth of eleven children. When she was 7 her family moved to Ashford Connecticut, where she would live for the next sixty years. Her older sister Martha died at age 16 when Patience was just 13, leaving a six year gap between Patience and her next oldest sibling and since her younger brother had died at birth, there was also a seven year gap between Patience and her next youngest sibling. At age 20 Patience married a 36 year old man, and over the next twenty five years gave birth to 10 children. She managed to raise all of them to adulthood, no small feat in those days of early childhood deaths. In 1804 her 30 year old son Abner died in Ashford and not long afterwards she and her husband sold their land in Ashford and followed their older sons to Onondaga County, New York. Most of their children also ended up in Onondaga. Her son Caleb died in 1804 and just seven months later she also lost her husband. Patience outlived the rest of her children, except for her son Abel who died in 1813, while serving in the War of 1812. His father had asked their youngest son Cheney "to give his mother a comfortable maintenance" during her widowhood, so he probably looked after her until her death in 1816. She and Joseph are both buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery in Navarino, Onondaga County, New York.
