Some of the older family members have said Francis "Fanny" Lee was originally born in North Carolina, and was half Cherokee Indian. This is supported by the census of 1800 with her born in New London, North Carolina under a listing of (01000-11110-11) CN 831. This "CN" represents the Cherokee Nation.

In 1829, Fanny Lee is listed in the Will of Wiliam Lee of Giles County. Tennessee. Other listed family members include: Strother Lee, Wm W. Lee, Edward, Tempie (m. Briton SIMMONS), Cynthia, (m. The 1850 census of Reynolds County, Missouri has Fanny Chatman born on 1798 in North Carolina. She is listed in the 1850 Census with her children: Wm C. Berry, Tennessee, Cynthia, Tray (m. Sarah ?)
