Samuel Martin

(24 Sep 1749 - Aft Oct 1818)

The Nassau-Siegen book states that Samuel was probably the eldest son of Henry & Mary Ann but dates from the Internet indicate otherwise. There are obvious problems with many of these databases.

Samuel did serve in the Rev War. His first wife was Lucy, as shown by a deed of 1808 in Mercer Co. KY. His will, dated 21 Oct 1818, Woodford Co. leaves property to his wife Susannah, sons Benjamin and Elijah and to his daughters. He probably died in 1824, as the appraisal of his property took place in Oct 1824, with the sale the following moth. [it is possible this appraisal & sale was his son of the same name]

There is much confusion in the Nassau-Siegen book...
" It is not certain, however, that the appraisal and sale in 1824 were those of Samuel Martin, Sr., for on Oct. 29, 1823 there is an account of the estate of Samuel D. Martin, decd. (Book "G", p. 68), "infant heir of James Martin, decd.", which calls either Samuel D. or James "one of the heirs of the first wife". The account shows the consent of the widow and the "last heir" are entitled; and Sarah Martin is mentioned as the widow, and William H., James S. and Anthony R. Martin as sons of James Martin, decd. Whether this record indicates that Samuel Martin Sr. had a son James who predeceased him is uncertain, as his will mentions only two sons, Benjamin and Elijah."
MPB - Point of Contention - Traditional information indicates that “OUR” Samuel Martin had only two sons - Benjamin and Elijah - although it appears he did have two other son who probably died in infancy.. The book "FORKS OF ELKHORN CHURCH" on page 204 does mention a "James H. Martain (now Martin) (1761-1811) was the son of Anthony and Sarah Holeman Martain, and grandson of Pierre and Mary Ann Rapine Martain, Huguenot refugees to Virginia." This James H. Martain married first Esther Smith, 1785 and lived in Franklin County, Kentucky. There children were:
1) Jean Bryan
2) a daughter married to B.C. Stephens
3) Maj. William H.
4) James S.
He married second Sarah Davis, 1809, and their children were:
5) Samuel D., died 1823
6) Anthony R., never married
This obviously refers to this family of Martins and not that of “OUR” Samuel Martin.

Continuing - From a Post'em Note on World Connect.
" Apparently Samuel Martin m. (2) 1815 Susannah, widow of Isaac Holleman who died in 1813, for Samuel's son, Benjamin, and the widow, Susannah, were administrators of Isaac Holleman, decd. July 23, 1813 (Woodford Co. Book "D", p. 106), and after the death of their father Benjamin and Elijah Martin were guardians of the heirs of Isaac Holleman, decd., Mahala (who had m. a Long), Nathan, Stephen, Catherine, and Henry M. Holleman (Book "G", p. 200)
MPB - Point of Contention - Susannah Martin (1782-1855), the daughter of the “OUR” Samuel Martin did marry Isaac Holman (c. 1779-1813). Her co-administrator of the estate of her deceased husband is in fact her brother, Benjamin Martin. Isaac Holman's widow, Susannah (Martin) Holman, married William Long on 6 August 1816 in Woodford County, Kentucky. The 21 October 1818 will of Samuel Martin, probated in 1826, clearly refers to his wife, Susannah - "In the the first place I give my whole estate both real and personal cash goods and chattles to my beloved wife Susanna during her life or widowhood" - certainly implying that she was still living at that time (1818). It also clearly refers to his daughter, Susannah, by name (the only daughter mentioned by name in the will) and to each of the 5 children of her first marriage by name - "... to be equally divided amongst all my daughters except my daughter Susannah To her I will nothing more than I have already given unless she becomes a widow which if she does she may then have a portion equal to that of her sisters but if she does not become a widow that portion mentioned I will and give unto her first five children namely Henry, Mahala Caty Nathan and Stephen Holeman."

Samuel Martin's unmarried daughter, Letty Martin, died in Woodford Co., Ky. in 1832. Her will, dated April 10, 1832 and probated in June, 1832, mentions the life estate of her mother in the land; leaves to Alsey Taylor land and money over which Ezekiel Taylor is to have no control; mentions land bought of Elijah Martin, once the property of Samuel Martin, decd., and "all my sisters"; and makes her brother, Benjamin Martin, executor. Alsey Taylor was probably another daughter of Samuel Martin. Benjamin and Elijah Martin, the sons appear in later deeds in Woodford Co., Elijah in 1820 and Benjamin in 1828, but nothing further is known of them at present.
MPB - Note - "The Scoggan/Thompson Letter" mentions that Samuel Martin's daughter, Lethtia was married to a Thompson. This is the only source I have seen to state such. This information as presented is consistent in all respects to other sources, such that it definitely refers to “OUR” Samuel Martin's family.
