In Missouri in 1849, a curator was the person the court appointed to manage the property of someone who legally couldn't manage it themselves. Usually that was a minor child, and sometimes an adult judged to be of "unsound mind."
The key thing to know is that Missouri law at the time split the job in two:
• A guardian had charge of the child's person: where they lived, their care, and their schooling.
• A curator had charge of the child's estate: land, money, enslaved people, livestock, or anything else the child owned or had inherited.
