Elbert was the 7th child. He served in Co K, 10th Virginia Cavalry in the Civil War. This unit was first known as the 2st Cav. Regt Wise Legion and the 8th Battalion VA Cavalry. He enlisted in 1861 and was captured 11 Oct 1863. He was released from prison at the end of the war on 10 Apr 1865.
