Dr. David R. Patterson

(20 Jul 1778 - 2 Oct 1829)

1820 Census, Nelson Co, VA [alpha]
David R. Patteson, 1 male between 26 and 45 [he would have been 42]. No one else in household. 36 slaves.
Other Pattesons in Nelson Co included Charles and Alexander
There was also an older David Patteson in New Canton, Buckingham Co. He had 1m under 10, 1m 16-18, he was also probably counted as the 2m 16-26, 1m 26-45, and 1m over 45. 2f under 10, 1f 10-16, 1f 16-26, and 1f over 45.

There is a Bible record at the Library of Virginia that states Dr. David R. Patteson of Nelson County, father of the David Patteson who married Elizabeth Camm, was a son of Rev. David Patteson of the Baptist Church in Buckingham Co. Goes on to state that he married Miss Sally Blakey, daughter of Thomas Blakey & Ann Haden; Thomas being a son of Churchill Blakey & Sally George.

However, also at the Library of Virginia is a very large manuscript collection, "The Patterson Family Papers, 1734-1906" Accession Number 24295. The guide to this collection online gives some confusing genealogical data. It states that the family was in Buckingham & Nelson Counties and both branches descend from a Thomas Patteson (1700-1745) of Albemarle [which was not a county until 1744]. Thomas had a son also Thomas (1734-1790) who lived in Buckingham Co. Second Thomas apparently also had a son David [1758-1846], although the reference to which Thomas isn't particularly clear. The first Thomas had a David [d. 1802] said to have lived in Amherst, then Nelson. Then the description lists a son David R. Patteson (1810-1862) who became a physician and his son also David R. Patteson with the same dates (1810-1862) who also became a doctor and married Elizabeth Camm. These dates fit the David who married Elizabeth Camm as the Bible has his dates of birth and death. There were two Davids, father and son that were apparently dcotors, but My research shows David who married Sarah George Blakey and was a Baptist minister, died about 1806 in Buckingham Co. His son David, b. 1778 in Buckingham, died 1829, Nelson Co and was a Dr. Then his son David, also a doctor, was born 1810, died 1862, back in Buckingham Co. The description online seems to have lost track of the Davids.

In Box 5, Folder 22 is a Genealogical chart of the family which would be very helpful to see. Box 6, Folder 14, includes Bible records. Box 6, Folder 19 is said to have genealogical notes of both the Patteson family of Buckingham and of Nelson County.

David R. Patteson of Nelson Co said to have served in the Virginia House 1812-1814 and again in 1825-26.

David Patteson of Buckingham served in the Virginia House 1806-1809. He is said to be the son of Thomas Patteson (1734-1790)
