Patrick Harmon

(1790 - 1857)

There is said to be a marriage bond in Grayson Co for the marriage to Mary Melton, believed to be his second marriage as she doesn't seem quite old enough to be the mother of his two eldest sons. However, Thomas gave his mother's name as Polly when he married Margaret Mabe - perhaps Patrick was married to two Marys. It is thought he was taxed as being over age 21 in 1809 and 1810 in his father's household in Grayson Co. He may be in his father's household in 1810 when there appeared to be a younger couple age 26-45. Note: I have not found this census in 1810. The profile suggested fits the 1820 census - there is no available census for Grayson Co in 1810.

1850 Census. Carroll Co VA. 11th Dist, Hh 886
Patrick claimed to be age 60, born in Maryland. He may have had both children and grandchildren in his household. Elizabeth 25, William 21., Rebecca 14, Nancy 10, William [Wilson?] 7 and Polly, age 5. All were born in Virginia.
He was next door to the family of Anderson Melton, age 37 [Patrick's wife had been nee Melton] And Hh 884 was James Harmon, age 26 with wife Elizabeth and his two oldest children.

There is a grave marker for Patrick and Mary Melton Harmon, Melton Cemetery, Caroll Co, VA. It is obviously much newer than the dates of their deaths.

I suspect that Wilson Harmon found in Grayson Co 1840 and later fought in the Civil War may be a son of Patrick's - he's given a birth date of about 1819. Or Wilson may belong to the widow Mary Harmon - she had a son that age in 1830 and she was still living in Grayson Co in 1840.
