Isaac Carroll Johnson

(1839 - 1913)

1850 Census. Dist 5, DeKalb, TN
Robert Johnson, 27. Sarah Johnson, 26.
Isaac C. Johnson, age 1.
[His Memorial on FindAGrave lists these as his parents]

A Carroll Johnson, age 11, was with a William & Nancy Johnson in the 1860 Census, Dist 9, DeKalb, TN. I believe he is a very different man.

There is a DeKalb Co marriage, 8 Mar 1874. Carroll Johnson to Elizabeth Culwell. Marriage license issued March 7th 1874. Rites of Matrimony between the above named parties on the 8th day of March, 1874. G. R. Smith, J. P. Perhaps this Carroll is a different person of similar name, because Isaac was living with Elizabeth (presumably Dennis unless this was her 2nd marriage) in the 1870 census. The 1880 census shows an Isaac Johnson with wife Elizabeth, Hardin Co TN, and his mother Nancy lives with them - this would seem to be the Isaac Carroll who was with William & Nancy in 1860 and married in 1874.

Elizabeth (Dennis) Johnson was living as head of household in 1880, but they may have separated - there was in fact, a divorce.

I found two Confederate pension files for an Isaac Johnson - he would have had to have been older than this child born in 1849 to serve in the Civil War unless he served as a young teen late in the War. In 1862 he would have been only 13 years old.

There is a file for Isaac Johnson, Widow, Lizzie Johnson..
Service listed as K 1, US CHA (Prob Co K, 1st Regt - I don't know what the CHA means)
Filed Invalid Pension 14 Feb 1884, Tennessee, Application 506091, Certificate 447833
The Widow filed 20 Feb 1891, Application 500031, Certificate 395048
I also found a Carroll Johnson who married Elizabeth Culwell, 8 Mar 1874, DeKalb, TN - they lived in Nashville in 1900 so obviously not this person who was dead prior to 1891. Nor does this appear to be the man who married Elizabeth Dennis.

This one seems more likely to be the correct person:
Another file was for Isaac C. Johnson. Minor, Mary Johnson, Gdn.
Served in Company F, 4th Regt, TN Mounted Infantry
Invalid Pension filed 22 Aug 1890 from Tennessee, Application 924059, Certificate 807022
Minor Pension filed 23 Jun 1913, Application 1010014, Certificate 763718 [is this for Nellie, see the 1910 census below]

DeKalb Co TN, 15 Apr 1907. Carroll Johnson marriage license to marry Mary Johnson - the marriage took place on April 17th, 1907.
1910 Census. Cannon Co, TN, Hh 116
Isaac Johnson, 70, married twice, this time for 3 years, b. TN, Farmer
Mary, wife, 21, married once for 3 years, 1 child, b. TN
Nellie, dau, 2, b. TN
