Cornelius Van Horne

(1695 - 12 Feb 1744)

Most sources give us birth as 1695, but cite a baptism in New York, 16 Oct 1706. This seems rather odd and probably should be investigated further. His gravestone would seem to reinforce the birth in 1695.

Captain Cornelius Van Horn, son of Abram Van Horn, was baptized in New York, October 16, 1706. {This statement is puzzling because his father appears to have been Mattias Cornelius and the baptism seems late.] He married (first) Catharine Cox; (second) Elizabeth Lawrence; (third) Hannah Seebrook. He settled in Monmouth, New Jersey. After his third marriage he removed to Hunterdon county, where his brother Abram and sister Helena also lived. He and his brother bought the time of a German emigrant for a term of years to pay his passage to this country. This man bargained to build three houses in three successive years for his freedom, he having all the spare time. One of these was a stone house with the initials C. V.H., dated 1753, and stood half a mile west of the White House station, and north of the railroad. Captain Van Horn's will, dated December 24, 1743, with a codicil February 3, 1744, proved March 16, 1744, bequeathed to wife Hannah and his children. He was buried in 1744 in the old Van Horn graveyard at White House and the gravestone is standing. It gives the date of death as February 12, 1744. His widow married Benjamin Drake, of Hopewell, near Trenton. Child of first wife: Thomas, born December 4, 1722. children of second wife: Mathias, 1724; Catharine, Elizabeth. Children of third wife: Mary, April 12, 1733; Cornelius, May 4, 1737; Abram, August 28, 1738; James, April 23, 1740; John, May 3, 1742; Daniel, May 2, 1743.

Captain Cornelius Van Horne led a New Jersey contingent of British Troops
in the expedition against Canada in 1737. He named his wife Hannah,
seven sons, three daughters and his brother Abraham in his will.

Cornelius Van Horne was a Captain in the New Jersey militia. He fought
in the Colonial wars in 1737 and 1745. Later he was Commissioner of
Peace for Huntendon County.

After the death of Catherine Cox, Capt. Cornelius purchased a large tract
of land in Hunterdon County near the confluence of the northern and
southern branches of Rockaway Creek, near land owned by his brother
Abraham who had recently founded Whitehouse, New Jersey. He must have
purchased this land sometime before November 6, 1728 as on that date, he
and his brother Abraham were appointed on a Commission to try pirates.

According to "Our Van Horne Kindred" he was buried in the old cemetery
near the Railroad Station in Whitehouse and his tombstone inscription SAYS:
"In Memory of CAPTAIN CORNELIUS VAN HORNE Died February 12, 1744 in ye
49th year of his age."

Find A Grave Memorial# 11998380. His stone is now broken and chipped but said to be clearly the oldest marked grave in the cemetery - Haypress Cemetery, Whitehouse Station, Hunterdon Co, NJ.

Cornelius left a will dated December 24, 1743, with a Codicil added on
February 3, 1744 and are recorded in the Book of Wills, No. V. page 17,
in the office of the Secretary of State at Trenton, New Jersey. This
will is dated at Reading Town, County of Hunterdon, in the western
division of New Jersey and makes the following bequests: --
