As eldest son, William was Earl of Norfolk.
William was one of those drowned when the "White Ship" went down in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy, 25 Nov 1120. There was a single survivor. One of those who drowned was the only surviving legitimate son of King Henry I, which led to a period of civil war in England.
