William "Strong Hand" D'Albini 1st Earl of Arundel

(Ca 1104 - 12 Oct 1176)

The Earl of Arundel may be the oldest extant title in the Peerage of England. It is currently held by the Duke of Norfolk as a courtesy title.A book, Earls of Arundel by M. A. Tierney, is said to profess that Roger of Montgomery, the 1st earl of Shrewsbury and one of William the Conqueror's generals received the property at Arundel from William with the charge to fortify it with a castle.

The title of Duke of Norfolk, the premier duke, was first in the hands of Roger Bigod but the last Bigod died without heirs in 1312 - the title eventually passed to Thomas Mowbray.
John Howard, the son of Thomas Mowbray's elder daughter Margaret, was created 1st Duke of Norfolk in 1483, in the title's third creation. From this point to the present, the title has remained in the hands of the descendants of John Howard.
