Individual Details
Henry Tudor VII, King of England (1475-1509)
(28 Jan 1457 - 21 Apr 1509)
Three great grandson of Edward III. Became the first Tudor king by right of Conquest. He descended matrilineally from John Beaufort, illegitimate son of John of Gaunt, 3rd surviving son of Edward III by John's mistress Katherine Swynford. Gaunt & Swynford did marry - but 25 years after the birth of Henry - declared retroactively legitimate by a papal bull.
John Beaufort's granddaughter Lady Margaret Beaufort married Edmund Tudor, son of a Welsh courtier and probably illegitimate. Tudor owed his fortune to the goodwill of his legitimate half-brother, King Henry VI.
