Matilda "Maude"

(Feb 1102 - 10 Sep 1167)

As a child, Matilda was betrothed to Henry V, Holy Roman Emperor - when she became his wife, she became the Empress Matilda. No children are known and he died after eleven years of marriage. Matilda was then married to Geoffrey Plantagent, Count of Anjou, in hopes of a male heir. She did have three sons with Geoffrey.

When her father, Henry I, died in 1135, the throne was usurped by her cousin Stephen, son of Stephen, Count of Blois, and King Henry I's brother. The years of unrest and civil war that followed are sometimes called "The Anarchy". She continued to campaign for the right of the throne of her son Henry.

The Treaty of Wallingford in the summer of 1153, forced Stephen to recognize Matilda's son Henry as his heir, although Stephen remained on the throne until his death in October of 1154.

Matilda's body was moved to the Cathedral at Rouen in 1847. Her epitaph reads: "Great by Birth, Greater by Marriage, Greatest in her Offspring: Here lies Matilda, the daughter, wife, and mother of Henry."
