John Annable

( - 8 Oct 1664)

Matthew Whipple's house was sold to John Annable, tailor, on 10 Jul 1647. John is reported to be his son-in-law. Matthew Whipple did name a daughter as Anna in his will, although no surname was given. Anna though to have been born about 1628, probably still in England - she was likely living in Ipswich when she married John Annable.

Children born to John and Hannah, other than Hannah/Anna who married Consider Atherton, thought to be Elizabeth, John, Robert, and Sarah. Elizabeth said to have married Alexander Canedy about 1676 in Plymouth.

From the Blaine Whipple website:
John Annable (the name was also spelled Anniball and Annyball) was born in Little Waldingfield, Sukffolk Co., England and died in Ipswich, Essex Co., Mass. 8 Oct. 1664. He married Anne Whipple in Ipswich about 1647. He arrived in New England from Boston, England in 1638 as a servant of John Whittingham and became a tailor in Ipswich where he bought a house and lot at the eastern corner of Market and Summer streets in 1642.

28 Mar 1665. Anna Aniball, brought in the inventory. The court ordered that the estate remain in her hands for the bringing up of the children. She is to pay to the eldest son, John, 20#'s and 10#'s each to the rest of the children , three sons and three daughters, at age; land to be security. [Ipswich Quarterly Court Records, Vol. 1, p.141]

Annable is not the most common of surnames but I have been unable to place John. He would have been an age to fit [probably born in the 1620's] among the known daughters of immigrant Anthony Annable, but no one seems to have placed him there except a stray database or two that seemed questionable in many ways. And no John was mentioned in the will of Anthony. Perhaps John was a nephew or cousin.

Anthony Annable is featured in the Great Migrations series. He came from Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England in 1623 on the "Anne". He lived first in Plymouth. He was granted four acres in the 1623 Plymouth land division, and in 1627 a division of cattle included Anthony, Jane, Sara & Hannah Anable. 9 Jun 1630, Anthony Anable sold Daniel Ray his dwelling house, garden plot, fence, etc.

Goodman Anniball and his wife were listed #4 and #5 in the founding members of the Scituate church on 8 Jan 1634/5 - he was listed as a Constable there a year earlier. On 29 Sep 1639, Anthony Annable, then of Barnstable, sold to Thomas Rawlins of Scituate his dwelling house and 22 acres.

His (Anthony's) will was dated 24 Feb 1672, probated 4 Jun 1674. He bequeathed his wife Ann the dwelling house and all lands formerly given to son Samuel; daughter Desire to have household stuff at wife's decease; each of daughters to have 12d. In a codicil dated 23 Apr 1674, he gave the lands to son Samuel at wife's decease. Inventory was presented 18 Jun 1674.

Anthony married 26 Apr 1619, All Saints Parish, Cambridge to Jane Moumford. And "Sister Anniball" was buried the 13th day of the 10th month, 1643, at Barnstable. He married (2) at Barnstable, 1644 or 1645 to Ann Elcock/Clark. Ann was still living as late as 30 Oct 1678, when named in the settlement of her son Samuel's estate.
