Sir William DE BRIWERRE. Lord of Horsley (DRB) Born circa 1145. Married Beatrice DE VAUX / DE VALLE. Sheriff of Devon for 10 years, until his death in 1227 in the reign of Henry III. After 1189 Itinerant Justice for King Richard. Seat: Bridgwater, Somersetshire. Circa 1192 "Richard employed his exceptional talents by making him an Itinerant Justice and an ambassador to the French court where he was instrumental in drawing up the terms for Richard's release from captivity, and on that king's second absence abroad Brewer was one of the 4 Justiciars appointed to guard the realm." William Brewer or William Briwere was a prominent administrator and justice in England during the reigns of Richard I, King John, and Henry III. He was also notable as a founder of a number of religious institutions. He was able to found and endow three monasteries: Torre Abbey in Devon in 1196, Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire in 1201, and Dunkeswell Abbey in Devon in the same year. In 1224 he retired from the world to live as a Cistercian monk at Dunkeswell, where he was buried with his wife before the high altar on his death in 1226.
He married Beatrice de Valle, previously the mistress of Reginald de Dunstanville, Earl of Cornwall and mother of Henry fitz Count, and they had several children, including:
William Brewer (d. 1232), married Joan, daughter of William de Redvers, Earl of Devon.
Richard Brewer (d. 1215).
Graecia, married Reginald de Braose.
Margaret married three times, William de la Ferte, Eudes de Dammartin and lastly to Geoffrey de Say
William Brewer, Bishop of Exeter, was one of Brewer's nephews.
