2 Jun 1809. James Herndon wrote his will "Having formerly given to my deceased daughter, Frances West, a negro woman named Sarah, which said negro woman with her negro boy child, Amos West traded to Thomas Proctor, and I also lent to my said deceased daughter in her life a certain negro girl, Phebe, which is now in possession of Amos West, my will is that the said negro Phebe remain in the possession of Amos West to help raise the children of my deceased daughter until the youngest son, Richard West, becomes 21 years of age, then it is my will that the said negro Phebe, the increase if any, be equally divided by sale or lottery at their choice among the said dec'd's children, Polly Milligan, Leonard West, Isabel West, Agga West, James West, and Richard West, which property so divided to be at their disposal forever."
