John Gilliam

( - 1651)

John is thought to have already been in Virginia when he perhaps sent for the following. Relationships are uncertain.
Ann Gillam, age 28 and her son Ben left England on 1 Jul 1635 for Virginia.
John Gillam, 21 and Thomas Gillam, 18, were transported to Virginia on the ship George, leaving Gravesend in England on 21 Aug 1635. Transported at the same time were George Fos, 14 and William Hinshawe, age 20.
Wm Gillam, 27, was to be transported to Virginia on the Constance, 24 Oct 1635.

John Gilliam appears in court records in Lower Norfolk County Court in 1639 but there is no way to tell if they refer to the elder or younger John.

2 Dec 1651, John Gilliam, the elder, made his nuncupative will, recorded on 7 Jan 1651/2. "Mary White, age 17, or theraboute sworne & Eamined as a Witness to ye last will & testamt of Capt Lefit John Gilham: saith That all & singler this Estate in this Country he did bequeath unto his brother in Lawe Mr. Roger Ffountayne, & did appoint him his sole Executor of his last Will & testamt, onely did bequeathe unto his Eldest sonne John Gilham his Rapier, & his usuall worn seale gould Ringe. And this is ye full some of his testamt. Witnes my hand: Marie White. [Transcription of Lower Norfolk County, Virginia Records, Vol. Two, Record Book C 1651-1656, John A. Brayton, p.1-2]
This testimony is the only clue to the name of the elder John Gilliam's wife. However, since brother in law could also mean a half-brother in this time period, could even mean the husband of John's sister, so the relationship is ambiguous. It appears that John still owned property in England.
On 15 Jan 1651/2, Roger Fountayne was given letters of administration, "being a great creditor", which might explain why the estate was not left to John's children.

There is a record in London for the burial of Elizabeth Gillam, 13 Dec 1619, wife of John Gillam, Parish of St. Alphage, London Wall, City of London. Since the only child ever identified seems to have been born prior to this date and there is no evidence of a wife in the intervening years, perhaps this really is John's wife.
