R. L. Haden, Businessman, Dies At 81
Robert Lee Haden, 81, of 90 Cedarbrook Drive, prominent Greenville SC businessman and church leader, died Thursday afternoon in a Hendersonville hospital after a long illness.
Mr. Haden was a native of Palmyra, Va., a son of the late William P. and Katherine Gentry Haden. Prior to coming to Hendersonville in 1947, he was the president and owner of the Haden Motor Co. in Greenville, SC, and the Greenville Finance Co. He was a deputy delegate to the 56th annual general convention of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America and served as a delegate to numerous diocesan conventions and to the Fourth Province Synod of the Episcopal Church. He was a member of the of the board of trustees of the Universities of the South at Sewanne, Tenn., and was a former vestryman of St. James Episcopal Church, of which he was a member.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Livingston Haden; two sons, the Rev. Robert L. Haden Jr. of Charlotte and William W. Haden of Hendersonville; a daughter, Mrs. Bruce Stone Keenan of Houston, Texas; and sever grandchildren.
The Burial Office will be said with a celebration of the Holy Eucharist at 2 pm Saturday in St. James Episcopal Church. The Revs. H. Alexander Viola, Walter D. Roberts, Bermard Hellmann and Fred Herlong will officate. The committal will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the yard of Christ Church, Episcopal, Greenville, SC.
Pallbearers will be Thomas S. Tisdale Jr., John M. Sterling, David S. King, William E. McGee, Robert W. Keenan, Fenno H. VanderVeen, Thomas D. Hunter III, and W.B.W. Howe.
The body will be placed in the Chapel of St. George of St. James Episcopal church from 4 pm Friday until the hour of the service.
The family has suggested that memorials may be made to Kanuga Conferences, P. O. Box 250, Hendersonville, or to the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn.
Friends may call at the residence at Cedarbrook Drive.
