William Halbert

Vandiver's History of Anderson County; R. M. Smith, 1970. Found in the Library of the SC Genealogical Society, Charleston, SC, May 2011, p.113, had several paragraphs about the Halbert family. William is said to have been the son of Joel Halbert who came from Wales and settled in Virginia. William was in the army of Virginia - presumably the Revolution. William and family moved to old Pendleton, settling along the Saluda River probably about 1786. He left to his wife and each of his children 200 acres and slaves.
Thirteen children are listed:
Joel who married Mary Lindley. They are said to have gone to Indiana in 1819.
Martha married John Gresham
John Halbert married Margaret Harper and moved to Mississippi.
Enos married Lucy Garner and moved to Tennessee.
Arthur married Elizabeth Cobb
James married Fanny Pepper and went to Missouri.
Susannah married Peter Acker Jr.
Frances married Charles Garrison and they remained in South Carolina.
William Jr married Betty Brown and went to Alabama
Joshua
Elizabeth married William Berry and went to Mississippi
Mary married John Sherrell and went to Missouri
Lucinda married David Berry and went to Mississippi

A transcript of William's will is digital online at SC Archives website. It was recorded WB A, 6 Mar 1809. It names wife Elizabeth, two acres including the home plantation during her natural life or widowhood. Should she marry, then she is to have one child's part after all the children are allotted. At their coming of age or marrying, son Joel the land bought from Ralph & Elijah owens where he is living and two slaves; son John, two slaves, mills & other goods in his possession; son Enos land in his possession; son Arther's children, 200 acres whereon he died and fifty acres of another tract to be divided between his children, Harry, John, Sinda & Arthur when they are of age; son James 200 acres of land joining Arthur's; son William, 332 acres including the mill of Big Creek and a tract of 90 acres; son Joshua, 200 acres joining James Cross, etc and at his mother's death to have the home plantation. Daughter Martha Grisham, slaves; dau Susannsh Acker, slaves; dau Frankah Garrison, slaves; dau Elizabeth Berry, slaves; daughter Mary Halbert, slaves, bed & furniture, stock; dau Lucinda Halbert, slaves, bed & furniture, stock, to equal the rest. After death of wife, the remaining estate to be divided among my children. Executors: Joel, John, and Enos Halbert and John Grisham. 30 Jul 1806.
