Said to be a Revolutionary War soldier. He served as the Caswell County Sheriff, 1799-1780.

His will is dated 13 Apr 1800 and names wife Abigail and son Zeri Rice. Six children or heirs: Zeri Rice, George Sims [married to dau Zebia], Robert Blackwell [married to dau Zillah], Lancelot Johnston [married to dau Zeruah], Daniel Gwyn [married to dau Zipporah], and Tench Vannoy [married to dau Zora]. Negro Lydia to choose her master. [bequest to Margaret Lackey not described]. Land on Country Line to be sold; surveying instruments to be sold. After wife's death, land to be divided among her children. Each child to have a horse when they come of age. Exec: Robert Blackwell, Lancelot Johnston.
