John's parents said to have been John Bates (1717-1766) who married Elizabeth Alford. Elizabeth was the daughter of John and Grace Alford of New Kent Co. The St. Peter's Parish Register shows that John & Grace Bates had children, Frances, Isaac, Elizabeth, Unity and Charity. Grace married Michael Harfield after John Alford's death - he died 2 May 1726. John identified Elizabeth, Unity & Charity in his will signed 1 May 1726 when he gave them nine slaves. In a court case in Halifax Co, Sept of 1771, John Bates south a settlement involving the slaves and the will was introduced as evidence. Included in the court case is the statement, "We find that a certain John Bates intermarried with Elizabeth Alford a legtee therein named..."

My wife Chloe Bates to have peaceable possession of land whereon I know live, about 66 acres; and 34 acres of the Mill Tract, as long as she lives, after to belong to son David Bates. John Moore shall enjoy 116 acres being surplus of the land bought of Moore calle the Mill Tract, after whose death it will belong to Armistead Moore.
My personal estate, after death of my wife, to be equally divided among my children: David, Elizabeth, John, James, Fleming, Matthew, and Susannah.
