John Haydon

(May 1728 - Jul 1801)

[It's extremely doubtful they were married in Kentucky as stated by Irene Cook since it was still a Wilderness at this time. They did settle in what would become Woodford Co KY. Probably married in Orange Co VA. There is also some question about the date.]

Some researchers show an earlier marriage for John to a Christian Brown, which could explain the fact that some of the children named in his may have been too old to have been Lucy Morton Haydon's children.

County Records, 1778 - father Thomas gave gift of 154 acres. Land in St. George Parish. May have been part of land bought from Fitzhugh? On 29 Aug 1781, John and wife Lucy sold the 154 acres to David Galloway Jr.

23 Aug 1781 John Haydon, planter, and Lucy his wife sold 100 acres of land to Richard Kenny, land which William Fitzhugh had sold to Thomas Haydon, April 10, 1770; Thomas gave to his son James Feb 17, 1778; James sold to his brother John, Jan 13, 1780.
Lived in Jessamine, Lincoln, and Fayette Counties in Kentucky.

According to copy of email from Christine Hayden of Cedar Rapids, IA, via Pamela Wojahn, this family lived in Jessamine, Lincoln, & Fayette Counties. Wrote will June 27, 1801, naming 15 children as shown. Each received a tract of land, negroes, cows and calf and furniture.

Abstract of Wills: Jessamine Co KY, Book A, p.137
John Heydon. 27 Jun 1801. Wife: Lucy. Sons: William, Jeremiah, Elijah, Noah, Lewis. Daus: Susannah, Sarah Thomas, Betsy Brown, Thirza Nelson, Lucy Salee, Polly Heydon. Ex: William Haydon [son], Abraham Bowman, George Smith. [this named all six daughters but does not list sons Abner, Jarvis, Thomas, John or Lewis]
[The abstract is obviously in error; son Thomas did receive land, a slave, a horse, a cow & calf, etc. See next. The will names all fifteen children. A good reason never to accept a abstract without seeing the "rest of the story".]

A second abstract of the Will found online:
