John and Mary lived at their 600 acre plantation, Cobbs, north of Petersburg, Virginia. John was a Major of Colonial militia and a member of the House of Burgesses.

Bolling’s line of his survey joining to Rock Castle; 1388 acs. Bounded as by patent dated 23 Dec., 1713, granted sd. Bolling; 320 acs. Bounded as by his patent dated 1 Apr. 1717; 1019 acs. In his will dated 20 Apr 1729, John gave wife Mary the home plantation, livestock and household goods. Daughter Mary received 1207 acres of land slaves; daughter Elizabeth received 1200 acres; daughters Martha and Ann also received tracts of land. Apparently John inherited the remainder as the eldest son. [note: no mention of daughter Jane, yet she is said to have lived until 1766]
