William Hawkins

(1609 - 1699)

William Hawkins received land in Providence Plantations, 20 Dec 1638. He was made freeman in 1655. He was one of the men who "staid and went not away" during King Philip's War.

The marriage to Margaret Harwood is proved only through circumstantial evidence. A land deed from Hawkins to Peter Place, 18 May 1687, Providence, does name William's wife as Margaret. A list of persons bound for St. Christophers and taking the oath of Allegiance before Mr. William Gourney, Mayor of Dartmouth, 20 Feb 1634, included William Haukins of Exeter, glover, aged 25 and Margaret Harwodd of Stokegabriell in Devon, spinster, aged 22.
