James Bates

(Ca 1754 - Bef 1820)

Moved soon after their marriage to Greenville Dist, SC. Belonged to the Head of Honoree Church. Most of their children probably born in South Carolina. James is in the 1800 census in South Carolina.

Found at the South Carolina Archives website.
A James Bates had a claim from the Revolution [likely a different James Bates]
27 May 1784 James Bates received 150 acres, South Pacolet River, 96 Dist.
10 Aug 1784 James Bates, plat for 239 acres, South Pacolet, 96 Dist.
I suspect this man in Camden District was a different James Bates.
6 Jun 1785 James Bates, 200 acres, south side Samey's Swamp, Camden District - an earlier plat for 640 acres to Samuel Reynolds, dated 13 Jan 1785, on Samey's Swamp, mentions James Bates as a neighbor.
17 Jul 1791 Plat on Swift Creek & Long Branch, Camden, 800 acres, surveyed for Peter Cassity & Burwell Boykin; James Bates named in deed, presumably a neighbor
5 Dec 1791 Aaron Short had plat for 220 acres on South Pacolet, Greenville Co, 96 District and the land was adjacent James Bates.

James & Elizabeth Bates are believe to have moved to Tennessee prior to the 1810 census.

There was also an Overton Goodman, member of the Honoree Church. He is also said to have lived in Rutherford Co NC in the 1780's. The 1800 census shows in Rutherford, Flammon [Fleming], Jacob & William Goodman. Overton Goodman was in the 1790 census in Greenville Dist, SC. An Overton Goodman was on a tax list, 1777, Caswell Co, NC. An Overton Jr. is said to have been in Gibson Co TN in 1830. An Overton was in Gibson in 1840, along with Abisha Goodman.
