Married Minerva Petty in Christian Co, KY. Her father was Drury Petty from South Carolina and Samuel Petty from TN signed marriage bond. After 1870 they moved to Cedar Co, Mo with the Pettys.

Minerva was killed by her nephew Sterling Brasher year 1893, poisoned.

1900 Census; John married a Mary Jane Shipman (maiden name Robinson) about 1898 in Buchanan Twp , Douglas Co, MO. It shows Jane's mother Elizabeth Box and children from Jane's first marriage living with them.
