Capt. Thomas Carter

(Ca 1630 - 22 Oct 1700)

Tradition suggests that Capt Thomas was married earlier and had two or three children who all died young. The marriage to Katherine Dale is recorded in the Carter family Prayer Book and says she was the eldest daughter of Mr. Edward Dale, also of Lancaster Co, VA. The births of their children are all recorded in the Prayer Book, as well as the babies' godparents.

Thomas was said to have been about age 21 when he first came to Lancaster. He is first on a tax list there in 1653 when he paid tithes for himself and four servants. During the years he appeared on the tax lists, he paid for as many as twenty servants. He purchased 800 acres on the Easternmost branch of the Corotoman River from Col. John Carter, 1 Jun 1654. He continued to acquire land over the next thirty years.

21 Oct 1663, He was given the Oath as Captain in Lancaster militia. A Capt Carter is listed as a burgess of the county in 1667.

Capt. Carter's will was dated 16 Aug 1700 and probated the following Nov 14th by his son Thomas Carter Jr. Wife Catharine was to have the home plantation for the rest of her life, a slave Dick, a great table, and one-third of his personal property.
