ALGERNON SIDNEY HOLDERNESS, JR., 72, died on Sunday, July 11, 2010 in Bellaire, Texas. He is survived by his loving daughters Claire Crockett Holderness of Brooklyn, New York and Julia Simms Holderness of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a grandson, Soroush Crockett Vakhshoori. Funeral services will be held at the Oakland Cemetery in Fordyce, Arkansas on Saturday, July 17 at 2 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Presbyterian in Bellaire, Texas, within the next month. A more detailed obituary with particulars regarding the memorial service will follow.

ALGERNON SIDNEY HOLDERNESS, JR. died of a sudden heart attack on Sunday evening, July 11, 2010 at his home in Bellaire, Texas. A funeral was held at the Oakland Cemetery in Fordyce, Arkansas on Saturday, July 17. He is survived by his loving daughters Claire Crockett Holderness of Brooklyn, New York and Julia Simms Holderness of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and by his grandson Soroush Crockett Vakhshoori, also of Cambridge. He is remembered by his cousin George Malcolm Holderness, of New York, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, Algernon Sidney Holderness, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Crockett Holderness of Radnor, Pennsylvania. He was the great-great-great-grandson of the frontiersman David "Davy" Crockett. Born in Wilmington, Delaware on March 31, 1938, Mr. Holderness spent his childhood and early youth in Providence, Rhode Island; Bellaire, Texas; Kansas City, Missouri; and Radnor, Pennsylvania. A lifelong Yale man, he received his BA in History magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Yale College in 1959 and his L.L.B. cum laude, Order of the Coif, in 1962 from Yale Law School, where he was a member of the Board of Editors of the Yale Law Journal. He garnered a prestigious federal clerkship under Judge Thomas W. Swan of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. Mr. Holderness subsequently specialized in private financing, practicing for many years as a partner at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy in New York, and later as a partner at Andrews Kurth LLP, first in New York, and then in Houston. At the time of his death, he was Of Counsel to Andrews Kurth. He was an active member of the American Bar Association, the TriBar Association, the American Law Institute, and the American College of Investment Counsel, which he served as President. His intellectual passion for the law translated into editorial work for publications by the American Bar Association and Tribar Association, and into publications of his own, most notably a Legal Opinion Letters Formbook, co-authored with Brooke Wunnicke, now about to appear in its third edition. In more recent years, he took up teaching as an Adjunct Professor at the South Texas College of Law. Of his work there, one student wrote, "When Professor Holderness talks, I listen."Mr. Holderness devoted what free time he had to his family and public service. He served on the boards of the Brooklyn Heights Association and the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York, and the New York and national boards of the YMCA. After returning to Texas in his later years, he focused his efforts on serving the Presbyterian Church. He was a church Elder, a Stephen Minister, and Clerk of Session. Music was another lifelong passion, especially choral music: he sang bass in the Yale Glee Club, and was an active participant in productions of the Blue Hill Troupe, a Gilbert and Sullivan Society in New York, the annual holiday musicals at Milbank, Tweed, and his church choir in Bellaire. Mr. Holderness was a brilliant man who set high standards for himself and expected the same of those around him. At the same time he had a tremendous sense of humor and took delight in life's absurdities. He literally could not stop moving - he was happiest when he was doing two or three things at a time. At his fiftieth college reunion he looked forward not only to reconnecting with his oldest friends, but to making new friends as well. Had he not experienced physical difficulty in his final weeks, he would have attended his fifty-fifth high school reunion as well, in Kansas City. His zest for life was strong until the end; his final day began with church and ended with a fine dinner. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 14 at two o'clock at Christ Church Presbyterian, 5000 Bellaire Avenue, Bellaire TX. All are welcome.
