The Ellis family, as well as other references, believes that this John Bowles, b. about 1776, married Susan Duval Ellis circa 1810. Susan was the daughter of John Ellis, b. 1738, who married Susannah Duval ca 1770, Henrico Co. This seems most likely.

Their children are named in the will of Knight Bowles:
15th One tenth to my three grandchildren, the children of my son John viz: Richard K. Bowles, Lucy A. Bowles and Augustus Knight Bowles to them and their heirs forever.

A descendant of this family as of August 2011, was in possession of a Bible record, giving dates of birth and death in Henrico Co for John, as well as the marriage date to Susanna DuVal Ellis and her date of death, and the births of the three children.


As is so often the case with this family, John, son of Knight Bowles is seen on the Internet as married to different ladies. There is no question that two men named John Bowles were of approximately the same age.
John is said to have married an Elizabeth Perkins - marriage not found. This name also given for his brother Thomas Bowles' wife, but Thomas's marriage record instead seems to be to Elizabeth P. Bowles, 1806 - they settled in Warren Co KY, probably shortly after the marriage. [Elizabeth's middle name believed to be Price, since her maternal grandmother was a Elizabeth Price.] I believe the John Bowles who married Elizabeth Perkins is the John Bowles with wife Elizabeth who died Logan Co KY, circa 1822-4 That John was likely still living when Knight Bowles wrote his will, 1817, and named the children of his deceased son John as Richard K., Lucy A. & Augustus Knight Bowles. The John & Elizabeth Bowles in Logan Co KY had a different set of children. I believe the John Bowles in Logan Co to have been the son of John Bowles & Elizabeth Curd - he was a brother to Elizabeth P. Bowles, above.
