Elizabeth "Betsey" Akin

(20 Jun 1782 - 9 Jun 1826)

Although most of the Allen research and genealogies list Nathaniel's wife as Almyra Aiken, he was married to a lady named Elizabeth or Betsy who died a few years before he did. Either Nathaniel was married twice [and no grave is noted for an earlier wife] or there has been confusion concerning her given name. I have no source for the name Almira in the Akin family, and Elizabeth seems more likely. However, the Ontario deeds seem to indicate that Nathaniel had no wife for the period from about 1814 or 1815 to 1818. He sold several properties and no wife was noted. The censuses do not help with the death of a first wife, as Almyra would have been living in 1810; Betsey in 1820.

Allen, Nathaniel; in memory of Nathaniel Allen who died in Louisville KY Dec 22 1832 in the 52nd year of his age.
Elizabeth, wife of Nathaniel, born 20 Jun 1782; died 9 Jun 1826. In the same grave is her infant son, Peter, b. 8 Apr 1826, died 9 May 1826. Likely Elizabeth died from complications after the birth of Peter.

There were Akins living in Pauling in the Beekman Patent where the Allens had lived. The research for Settlers of the Beekman Patent does not indicate an Almira or Almyra Akin/Aiken. Possibly because the lady was incorrectly identified, or perhaps Nathaniel married her after leaving New York. Akin research online relates a David Akin, who had married Hannah Wright. They are said to have left the Patent about 1790 for the Saratoga region of New York and then moved to Allens Hill in Ontario Co about 1810. They apparently had children named Orra [the source of the name Orrin?], Uniel, Sarah, Clara, and Elizabeth. Elizabeth is believed to have been the wife of Nathaniel Allen. Many members of this family are buried in the Allen's Hill Cemetery along with Nathaniel Allen and wife.

David Akin served on a jury in Pittstown as early as 1806.

History of Ontario Co., Everts, p.226
David Aken came to town and located a lot south of the residence of Isaac Abbey on the west side of the road. Uriel, his son, settled on a farm of 100 acres opposite his father... Orry Akin, another son, located on thirty acres... The father and sons were blacksmiths, in a shop built in front of Uriel's place, ear the road. Here the Akens resided for twenty years until wife of David Aken died, when all sold and moved to farms on the road to Honeoye from Allen's Hill. The father sold to his son-in-law, Jonathan Jeromes; his sons sold to William Baker. David & Orry settled on the Henry Ogden place and Uriel bought where Benjamin Ogden lives. The family were cut off by consumption, a disease herditary to them... Thomas Wilson, son-in-law of David Aken, purchased a large tract joining Uriel on the south.
