Lafayette Advertiser, Saturday morning edition, 20 Mar 1897:
The venerable James Higginbotham died at his late residence in Lafayette Wednesday, March 17, 1897 at 1:20 AM at the advanced age of 85 years. He retained all his faculties and superintended his business personally up till the day of his death. Mr. Higginbotham was born in Georgia, but came to Louisiana seventy-four years ago. The funeral was held from his residence Thursday morning, interment took place in the Protestant Cemetery.

James married 2nd 14 Jan 1845 to Martha N. Campbell. Two children died in infancy. Martha died at birth of second child on 7 Mar 1759, Pinhook [now Lafayette] LA.

James married 3rd 18 Oct 1859 to Elizabeth Tinsley.

Claimant, James Higginbotham, resided in La Fayette Parish, LA during the late war; he did not give aid and comfort to the rebellion, but was throughout that war loyal to the Government of the United States.
There follows a list of items to include lumber, cattle, horses, sugar, molasses, flour, corn meal, fodder, corn, potatoes, pork and wood.
The court finds of the said stores and supplies there was taken for the use of the U.S. by the military authorities in the aggregate value of $2623. No payment has been made for any part or portion.
Subscribed and sworn before the Clerk of Court, La Fayette Parish, LA on 14 Aug 1886.
Under provisions of an act approved 3 Mar, 1883, the Committee on War Claims found that the amount due should be allowed.
