William Lea

( - )

This connection to a William Lea is unproved.

1704 Quit Rent Rolls of Virginia: William Lee listed with 230 acres in King and Queen County.

19 Dec 1711 Guy Smith, clerk of the County was granted 320 acres of New Land in King & Queen Co. 184 acres in the old Store Neck below Mr. Fortson's old store, where Mr. William Leigh, son of Col. William Leigh, hath a Quarter on the W side of Great Harquake Crk in St. Stephen's Parish. The other tract in Stratton Major Parish bet Gr Harquake & Little Harquake on the N side of the Mattapony; on Mr. Story's Mill Road to the upper side of the Bridge. Import of 5 persons. LGB 10, p.47

16 Dec 1714. Land grant to William Lea. 100 acres, Escheat Land. King & Queen Co, St. Stephen's Parish, W side of Mr. John Madison's Mill Swamp on N side of Mattapony River adj John Taylor, Mrs. Anne Wiltshire & Thomas Camp. Escheated from Thomas Ware, dec'd. by inquisition under Matthew Page on 13 Oct 1703. LGB 10, p.214

1 Sep 1752. William and Frances Lea of Spotsylvania Co VA sold 100 acres to Thomas White. She is said to be nee Frances Major, daughter of George Major. and they are thought to be the parents of James [County Line] Lea.

There is also a Letter of Attorney, 11 Mar 1785, in Caswell WB B, p.36. James Lea, son and heir of William Lea, deceased, appointed Thomas Phelps to be his attorney to obtain title to a 25 acres of land in King & Queen Co, on the "Matipani" River near Maddison's Mill. This description matches the above land in the 1714 grant. One can conclude that James' father was William, but this does not explain for certainty which of the James Leas of Caswell this is [although other records indicate that James [Kilgore Branch] had a father named John] And although this P of A links back to the King & Queen lands, it does not show a relationship to that William Lea in Spotsylvania Co.
