Family tradition states that Frances Poindexter Apperson's second husband was cruel to the children, especially William. Thomas Poindexter, her father, is said to have had one of his slaves kidnap the boy and he raised him. William married 6 Jun 1781 to Elizabeth Kerr, who was born 23 Dec 1763 in Goochland Co VA and died 28 Jun 1850 in Surry Co NC. Their family is said to have gone to Surry Co NC along with William's uncle Thomas Poindexter. He served in the Revolution and fought at the battles of the Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth and White Plains. He was wounded three times. He served from NC as a private in Capt Brown's Co. Some of his children moved on to Tennessee and then Missouri.

William is buried in what is now called the Myers Farm Cemetery, East Bend, Yadkin Co, NC

Elizabeth applied for a Revolutionary War pension on her husband's service. She applied from Stokes Co where she was living with her son-in-law Thomas Sprinkle. She was too infirm to travel and testified from home on 19 Mar 1838. She stated her name was sometimes spelled "Epperson" and she was age 76 on 23 Dec 1837. She was the widow of William Apperson who was a private in the Revolution. He served as a substitute for William Harrison who had enlisted as a Continental Soldier under Capt Joseph Phillips in Surry Co in Col. John Armstrongs Regt. Her husband related he fought at Brandywine, Germantown near Philadelphia, Monmouth, White Plains, and was at New York. He served two years and six months - Harrison had enlisted for three years but had served six months of his time. For this service he claimed and received a Bounty of 228 acres of land in the Western district of Tennessee. William then served as a substitute for William Head of Surry Co in Aug of 1779 and marched to Salisbury and into South Carolina; he served three months. Next William entered as a substitute for David Poindexter in Capt Joseph Phillips Co at Surry old Court House in the Spring of 1780 in Col. Wm Shepperds Regt of Militia; he was ordered to transport lead from the lead mines to the Main Army. They marched in pursuit of Tories in many directions but returned home, always in readiness to meet at old Richmond as one of the Minute Men. He served three months for David Poindexter. Next was his own turn to be drafted and he turned out as a volunteer private in the same company of Minute Men under the same officers for three months in May of 1781. The applicant was married to William and he then served as a Guard at Richmond and was discharged in the fall of the same year, his discrage signed by Col. Martin Armstrong. She was well acquainted with her husband when he first went into the Service as her father and her husband's families resided not far from each other. She was married to William Apperson by Col. Martin Armstrong, a Justice of the Peace for Surry County on the 6th day of Jun 1781 at the house of Thomas Poindexter in Surry Co. William Apperson died 22 of Mar 1826 and she has remained a widow. She signed with her mark.

On the 28th of December of the same year, 1838, Elizabeth Apperson again testified from the home of Thomas Sprinkles of Stokes Co NC. She again testified to her husband's service and presented the family record in a Bible which was copied. The dates of birth of William, Elizabeth, their children and some of the children of her son Thomas were listed. A note accompany the Bible pages, states that the same was written by the Reverand Wm Steele.

She was allowed pension of $80 per annum to begin 4 Mar 1848. It is likely there are other papers in the complete Pension File, W3915.
