Hon. Henry D. McHenry

I found a Bio for Henry D. McHenry in The History of Kentucky, 1886. The article stated that his father was Hon. John H. McHenry [true] and his mother was a daughter of Col. John Hardin, who was killed on a mission to the Indians. It was his grandmother, Sarah Hardin McHenry, wife of Rev. Barnabas McHenry, that was the daughter of Col. John. Henry's mother was Hannah Davis.

Henry had graduated from law school in 1845 and was admitted to the bar in Hartford KY. In 1851 and again in 1865, he served as a state representative. In 1861 he was a senator. He served as chairman of the Judiciary Committees in both houses. In 1867, he was defeated in his campaigan for U.S. senator by only two votes; he was elected to the 42nd Congress. He participated in and held offices in the Democratic National Committee. He was said to be a large owener of coal mine interests, president of the McHenry & Rockport coal companies and of the Bank of Hartford. He was of portly and stiking personal appearance and of agreeable manners. He was married on 27 Jan 1856 to Miss Jennie Taylor of Hardinsburg, a lady of fine literary accomplishments and authoress of a volum of peoms much admired.

McHENRY, Henry Davis, (son of John Hardin McHenry), a Representative from Kentucky; born in Hartford, Ohio County, Ky., February 27, 1826; attended the public schools at Hartford, and was graduated from the law department of Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky., in 1845; was admitted to the bar in 1845 and commenced practice in Hartford; member of the State house of representatives 1851-1853 and 1865-1867; served in the State senate 1861-1865; member of the Democratic National Committee from 1872 until his death; elected as a Democrat to the Forty-second Congress (March 4, 1871-March 3, 1873); resumed the practice of his profession in Hartford; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1890; died in Hartford, Ky., December 17, 1890; interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
