Individual Details
(1507 - 19 May 1536)
Anne Boleyn was the 2nd wife of the six wives of King Henry VIII. The King was only 17 when he ascended the throne. He was first married for 20 years to Catherine, widow of his brother Arthur, who was the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain. King Henry broke away from the Catholic Church, established the Church of England, in order to have Catherine banished and their marriage declared invalid so he could marry Anne. He was desperate for a male heir and Catherine had produced only a single daughter, Mary. Anne gave birth to a child, Elizabeth who would become Queen Elizabeth I, in 1533. She became pregnant again, but miscarried. The King was enamored with Jane Seymour, who would be the third wife. He had Anne arrested and charged with affairs with five men, including her own brother George. All of the men were convicted and sentenced to death. Anne Boleyn was beheaded on 19 May 1536 and on May 30 King Henry married Jane Seymour.
