Robert Wickliffe

( - Abt 1760)

Charles and Robert who married the Hardin ladies, were said to be brothers. The will of Charles, WB C, p.45, Washington Co KY, is abstracted as saying that it mentions land formerly belonging to my father Robert Wickliffe.

In some place on the Internet, Charles' father is given as Elijah, but I believe Elijah was another brother, not their father. Robert Wickliffe, was born probably about 1698 in Westmoreland Co VA and died 1760 in Prince William Co. Robert may have been married twice - to a Dorcas Arrington and to Elizabeth Anderson - there is considerable confusion over which lady he married first and which wife was mother of which children. Charles is said to have been about age four when his family moved to Prince William.

Fauquier Co was formed from Prince William about the time of the death of the elder Robert and the family may have become acquainted with the Hardins there. The younger Robert's marriage to Mary Hardin is recorded in 1759. Charles probably married Lydia about 1770 [he seems to have been the younger brother] and they moved with the Hardins to the George's Creek settlement near the Monongahela River in Pennsylania [the part of PA disputed with Virginia]. After the Hardin brothers and cousins had been to Kentucky, they came back and moved their families. The Wickliffes followed along to what was Nelson Co but now Washington Co, on Sulphur Run, a branch of Carwright's Creek. Charles may have inherited property in Virginia from his father and unmarried brother Elijah. He is also have said to inherited from his brothers Nathaniel and Robert.
