Armstrong McAdams, is a native of Harrison, Kentucky, born 24 October 1827; he is of Scotch ancestry. Armstrong was reared on the home farm in Pike County and educated in the public schools. In 1850 he crossed the plains by horse team to California and was six months en route. He located on Weaver Creek and engaged in mining indifferent places for three years. He returned home by water and the Gulf & Mississippi Railroad. He enlisted in the State Militia and served three years. In the fall of 1864 he was mustered out and went to Montana, where he engaged in mining and remained four years, being reasonably successful. In 1867 he returned to Missouri and bought one hundred and thirty acres of land, which he has since made his home. He was married October 14, 1877, to Avarilla Hyde, widow of Preston Hyde,and daughter of EDMUND and ELIZABETH (HAYDEN) BAILEY; Elizabeth was born in Ralls County, Missouri. Her father was born in Virginia and her mother in Kentucky. After his marriage Armstrong remained on his farm until the death of his wife, which occurred on February 25, 1883.By their union was born one child, who died in infancy. Some two years after the death of his wife (Elizabeth) Mr. McAdams married Mrs. Polly Tompkins, widow of C.W. Tompkins and daughter of Geroge and Polly(Roland) Ashburn.
