James Steele was in Hartford by 1657. He was a son of George Steele and was probably born in England. Bethia Hopkins Stocking was probably his second wife. His 1st wife was perhaps Ann, daughter of John Bishop. They had children James b. about 1658, John b. about 1660 who died before his father, daughters Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth & Rachel. James Steele was commissar for all the CT forces in King Philip's War.
