Joseph was named in his grandfather Stocking's will, dated 15 Jul 1673. He married (1) a daughter, Martha?, of Dea. Paul Peek who left him a legacy in his will dated 25 Jun 1695. He married (2) on 10 Feb 1698 to Sarah Waters, daughter of Bevil Waters. Bevil Waters died Mar 1729, leaving his 500#'s to his eldest daughter, Sarah Benton, wife of Joseph Benton.

"Original Distribution of the Town of Hartford, CT, among the Settlers, 1639" NEHGR, Vol 12, p.141: Joseph Benton was married to Sarah Waters, FEb. 19, 1697.

Joseph inherited, after his stepmother's death, the homestead formerly owned by Nathaniel Greensmith a the junction of the roads leading to Wethersfield and Farmington. Joseph sold it June, 1693.

Joseph removed from Hartford to Tolland CT, where he and his son Joseph, his brother Samuel and Samuel's son Samuel, were inhabitants and first proprietors, 14 May 1716. Joseph was the first town clerk, serving from Dec 1717 to Dec 1720, a selectman in 1721 and 1722, a first deacon of the church. At a survey of the line between Tolland and Coventry, in 1722, his house and three acres fell within Coventry, but by agreement he was still counted as an inhabitant of Tolland. He was at Newington CT on 23 Nov 1739. In 1742 he removed, probably with his son Jehiel, to Kent in Litchfield Co CT. His gravestone is in Good Hill Cemetery, near Kent: Hear Lies the Body of Dec'n Joseph Benton who died August 12th 1753 in the 93rd yr of his age.

By his 1st wife, Joseph had one son, also named Joseph, who married Sarah Pynchon. His will dated 23 Jun 1666, gave all his estate to his beloved wife Sarah.

By the 2nd wife, Joseph had: Ruth, Sarah, Isaac, Aaron, Jemima, Jehiel, and Kezia. All the children were born in Hartford.
