Heritage Quest - Revolutionary Pensions, Elijah, or Elisha, Benton, #R787
He served as a private in the Connecticut Continental Line. He was subscribed on the pension roll of New Hampshire, as of 5 Jun 1818, which was the date of his application in Coos County. He was living in Stewartstown. In 1778, he enlisted in the Company commanded by Capt. Prior, Regt. of Col. Andrew Ward, for one year. He was discharged at Morristown, NJ. Then he enlisted again for three years under Capt. Ichabod Hinkley and the regt at Peekskill under Col. Sherman. He was discharged at Springfield. He enlisted a third time in the company of George Hurlburt, Regt of Col. Shelden. He was nearly sixty at the time of his application. William Lovejoy, one of the Justices of the Court of Common Pleas certified that he was acquainted with Elijah Benton and knew he was absolutely in need of assistance.
11 Jul 1820 Benton testified to his service and to the members of his family, as wife Sally, age 42 years; Joel 15, Elijah 13, Lewis 11, James 9, Jeremiah 7, Betsey 4, and Hiram 2.

8 Oct 1845 Sarah Benton, of Colebrook, Coos Co, age 72, made declaration for pension under the service of Elisha Benton who had been a pensioner. They were married on the 20th of October, 1793, in Stewartstown. Elisha died 17th Aug 1841. Their marriage did take place before January 1, 1794.
[There was no record within these pages that gave Sarah's maiden name, but a summary of his service did state her name as Sarah Sellingham. Since the digital copies on Heritage Quest are not the complete files, I suspect there is a marriage record, or testimony that gives her maiden name.]

22 Jan 1852 Hiram Benton made oath he was a son of Elisha Benton who had died 17th Aug 1841. His mother Sally Benton died January 1846. They were married in 1793. Hiram appointed an attorney to receive any arrears in pension.
There was a file - only one page - for Bounty Land - quite possibly the heirs did receive the land.
