Mary "Polly" Powell

( - )

Mervin Walters gives further information regarding Mary "Polly" Powell, second wife of Obediah. She is said to have had two Powell children by an earlier marriage. She may have left Grainger Co after the death of Obediah. There is said to be a Polly Walters listed in the 1840 Census of Lawrence Co IN near Abner Walters with four children. Possibly these could be her two children, and Isaac & Abraham Walters, children of Abraham not yet married. [See note below - I'm not at all sure about this interpretation of the census.] Then he states that she might have been the Mary Walters listed in Crawford Co AR in 1850 - when I looked this up, she was living alone, age 60, born in VA, and not living near anyone whose name I recognized. Mr. Walters did not state why he thought this could be the same Mary.

In 1830 in Lawrence Co IN there was a Hiram Walters, age 20-30 with spouse age 20-30 and one small boy under 5, p.97. Abner Walters was there with his family on p.64. Not living close together at all. In 1840, Lawrence Co IN, Abner and family were on p.218. There were, in 1840, two widows, named Walters, one was Polly on p.200, the other was Susan, p.241. Susan was age 50-60 with a girl between 15-20 and a male aged 30-40; no clue to who she might be. Polly could be Hiram's widow; in her household was a boy, now 10-15 and a younger boy age 5-10. There were three women in the household, one age 10-15, one 30-40, and one 50-60. The 30-40 year old lady would be Hiram's spouse appropriately aged, and could have relatives living with her. I would doubt that the two daughters of Polly Powell Walters would be this far apart in age, if Polly was the 50-60 year old, and Obadiah's widow.
