Individual Details
Charles MacCawthon
(1720 - 1767)
Databases online give birth information for Charles MacCawthon in South Leith, Scotland, often seen incorrectly as the home of the Walters family. Someone may have "supposed" they had the same origins. The McBees were also a Scottish family but were apparently located in Maryland prior to Virginia. Cemetery records of the South Leith area have proved that the "Watters" family located there cannot be the same as the Walters found in Virginia in the 1700s.
In the Walters book Charles is said to have had 6 children - they are then listed as Charles, Claiborne, Sarah, Judith, Elizabeth & Mary. However when the book continues, the eldest son is then listed as JOHN Cawthon, not Charles. He married Rebecca Mount [or Blunt] and I do believe he was John. Several of Charles' children married children of Robert Walters Sr. Claiborne married Hannah Walters. Judith married Elijah Walters. Mary married John Walters. There was also a marriage between Elizabeth Cawthon and Moses Walters but other sources indicate she was the next generation and a daughter of William Cawthon, another son of Charles not listed in the Walters book.
Some databases indicate Charles to have been married twice with the children divided between the wives. A Womack being the second wife.
Elizabeth Womack is said to be the daughter of Thomas Womack and Mary Farley in one database. I'm not sure this is correct - the only Elizabeth Womack I find online of this approximate age [born perhaps 1725] that is the daughter of a Thomas Womack & Mary Farley, married John Hatchett probably in the late 1720's and was born some 20 years earlier than this one. Of course there could have possibly been more than one Thomas Womack who married Elizabeth Farley & had a daughter Elizabeth but that's stretching things somewhat. The same database listed two spouses for Charles with the children divided between them.
Another database states that Elizabeth Womack Cawthon's father was Abraham Womack. This database indicates she was the mother of all the children.
"Planitiffs vs. Abner Womack. Eliza Cauthorn who was Elizabeth Womack [living in Franklin Co GA, age 90 in 1812]. Father was Abraham Womack. From Huxford abstract of Legal Notices in Early Georgia Newspapers." This would certainly make her old enough to be the mother of all the children. Said to be a deed in Halifax Co VA, 18 Sep 1760 which mentions the line between Charles Cawthon and Isham Womack.
It's obvious that Abraham Womack did have a daughter Elizabeth who married a Cawthon. From: GENEALOGICAL MATERIAL FROM LEGAL NOTICES IN EARLY GEORGIA NEWSPAPERS, compiled by the Hon. Folks Huxford, p.201 and 202. Issue 22 Apr 1812 and other issues of the "Virginia Legal". [does not state which GA papers the following appeared in nor which heirs were actually residents of GA - the court records from Charlotte Co VA should reveal more]

Commissioners in the matter to whom the parties are to apply: JAMES DUPUY, JR., of Nottoway, VA. And ANN DUPRY of Price Edward, VA. Notice in newspaper dated June 28, 1811.
[Information from various websites and WorldConnect databases, indicates that the deceased William Womack of the above notice, died intestate in Charlotte Co without issue and the above heirs are his siblings, or their children, his nieces and nephews, many of whom were already adults and married. His brother Thomas is believed to have been the Administrator. William Womack was the son of Thomas Womack who married Mary Farley, daughter of John Farley. Their children other than the sons William and Thomas included the above Martha Robard, dec'd, who had been married to John Robards; Abram or Abraham Womack, dec'd & father of Elizabeth Womack Cawthon; Isham Womack, dec'd; Sarah Womack Rice, dec'd; Judy Womack Hambleton, dec'd, Mary Womack Mann [apparently the only living sibling]; and Elizabeth Womack Hatchett, dec'd.]
The children of Thomas Womack and Mary Farley were probably born between 1725 and 1740 or so in one database; between 1705-1725 in another. This is a difference of an entire generation. One database gives the birthdate of Abner Womack, brother to Elizabeth Womack Cauthon, as being 7 Jan 1764, and lists Elizabeth as the next child born [birth order could have been taken from the above legal case which would not be at all conclusive]. Another database shows her father Abraham as having married twice and Elizabeth born about 1740. She would have to had been born by this time to be the mother of any of Charles MacCawthon's children. It's obvious there are research problems with the Womack link to the Cawthon family and more research is required, especially the court records of Charlotte Co. It is worth noting that the given name Abner shows up in the Georgia descendants of Robert Walters after the Cawthons marry into the family; however, it also shows up in descendants of Thomas Walters of Pittsylvania Co VA, none of whom are known to have married Cawthons.
