James served in the War of 1812. He enlisted at Dandridge, Jefferson Co TN, and served as a private from 10 Jan to 28 Jan, 1814. He served in Gapt. George Gregory's company of Tennessee Militia, 13 Nov 1814 - 18 May 1815, and in Capt. James Churchman's Co of Tennessee Militia. In 1851, he lived at Dandridge; in 1855 he was living Crawford Co AR. He was allowed pension on his application dated 27 Jul 1871 when he was aged about eighty. He had married about 1 May 1809 in Rockingham, Richmond Co NC, to Catherine McCall. In 1855, a Mastin C. Rainwater was also residing in Crawford Co AR, but no relationship was state.
