Joseph Echols

(1704 - Abt 1766)

Joseph is said to have never married. He probably died after 1766. He was said to have sold much of his land to a nephew and namesake who is apparently the Joseph Jr. that appears in Halifax Co beginning about 1761. Joseph Jr was probably the son of Abraham Echols since Joseph & Abraham appeared to have lived near each other for sometime. However, Richard also had a son named Joseph,

Joseph's first land patent was dated 1 Aug 1734 in Prince George Co - the same day as his brothers William & Abraham. It states he was of Caroline Co and he appeared on the list of tithables in Caroline 1736-38. The patent was for 200 acres on the South side of the Appomattox River. He also patented 394 acres between the Angolo & Guinea Creeks in Goochland Co in 1736 - this area became Cumberland Co by 1749 and was just across the Appomattox from the land of the earlier patents of the brothers. The Goochland patent was allowed to lapse. In 1736, he also acquired 386 acres, both sides of the Great Bent Run now described as being in Amelia Co.

In 1738, Joseph sold the 386 acres to James Seay and begin to acquire land further south and west in Brunswick/Lunenburg Counties. The first patent of 200 acres was sold in 1746 and Joseph Echols was described as "of Lunenburg County".
